At Denver Christian, you’ll hear the phrase, “whole child education” often. We believe that a successful education is made of more than just academics, just extracurriculars, just community, etc. We know that every aspect of a student’s experience shape who they are and will become. Music is an essential part of whole child education, and we are so proud of our music program.
Adrian’s Journey to All State Band
We are ecstatic to share that Adrian Schreurs, a sophomore clarinet player, made it into the Colorado All State Band. This is the top select honor band in the state. It’s composed of band students from all over the state and is made up of a large school band and a small school band. Students audition in November, and results are posted in December after all submissions are adjudicated by the music faculty at the University of Northern Colorado. Annelise Disselkoen, a senior flute player, was also selected as a first alternate but did not participate.
Adrian has always been a gifted musician. In addition to being selected for All State Band, he also plays in the Colorado Youth Symphony Orchestra and at church. He continually pushes himself to grow as a musician. Adrian spends time practicing his various instruments (clarinet, bass clarinet, piano and drums). The audition music for All State Band is very difficult, so he spent quite a time preparing for the audition.
This is the first time a DC student made it into the All State Band in three years. During the three day event, Adrian participated in clarinet sectionals, a masterclass, and numerous rehearsals with the guest conductor, Dr. Michael Golemo, who is the Director of Bands at Iowa State University.
Celebrating Music Together
During the week, Adrian and our 5-12 Band teacher, Aimee Delnero attended a variety of performances. They enjoyed UNC’s Symphonic Band, Wind Ensemble, and chamber ensembles. The 101st Army Band also performed throughout the weekend. One exciting moment was when the high school band directors in attendance performed an “Over the Hill” band concert for the students. This was a wonderful celebration of music for the state.
We congratulate Adrian in this exciting milestone. As our music program continues to grow, we know there will continue to be many incredible moments to celebrate!
