2006 - 2006 Boys Basketball Back to Back State Champions

2006 3A -DC /Roaring Fork 68-52

Fort Collins – Dick Katte’s Crusaders weren’t about to send the rowdy Blue Crew home disappointed.

After a miraculous come-from-behind victory Friday against Colorado Springs Christian, Denver Christian made it back-to-back championships over Roaring Fork, posting a 68-52 win at Moby Arena on Saturday night.

It was the seventh state title in the illustrious coaching career of Katte, who in his 42 seasons at the parochial power has amassed 775 victories against just 185 defeats.

“The biblical thing about that is, seven is a number of completeness,” a philosophical Katte said. “I don’t know what that means I’ve done.”

Katte learned all he needed to learn about his team in Friday night’s 64-61 semifinal win, one in which the Crusaders rallied from seven points down in the final 50 seconds.

“I can’t tell you enough about those guys and how mentally tough they became (Friday night),” Katte said. “I thought they were always a physically good team, but they learned how to be mentally tough going through that emotional thing (Friday) night. It wasn’t very pretty today, but we were tough.”

The toughness came first from twin guards Cameron and Tristan Matthies. It didn’t matter how far out or how contested the shot, the seniors fired at will from outside and routinely hit. Tristan in the first half hit three of his four and Cameron was a perfect 3-for-3 in the third quarter when the Crusaders began to pull away.

“This gym is just something else,” Cameron Matthies said. “The couple steals I got just boosted me, and the 3-pointer was just so good to me. The flow of my shot just felt so good, and I just kept shooting it.”

The Matthies boys finished with 35 total points. The inside toughness came in the form of Brent Schuster and 6-foot-4 junior John Adamson. Schuster scored 12 points, but more important turned away six shots on the defensive end. Adamson had a total of nine points in the first two games and finished with eight against the Rams.

Roaring Fork (23-3) never found its offensive rhythm and shot just 29 percent (17-for-58) from the field. Senior Christian Tena paced the Rams with 16 points.

“Nobody really expected us to be here, and the kids just played their hearts out,” Roaring Fork coach Roger Walters said. “In big games you got to play your best, and we didn’t play our best tonight and Denver Christian had a lot to do with that.”
